Radar Training

Todays modern cockpits offer a barrage of information to the pilot from NEXRAD radar, uplinked weather, synthetic vision systems, and just about any other tech we can fit into the screens. Processing all this information while at 150 to 400 knots over the ground can be challenging, understanding the abilities and the limitations of the equipment is to master the weather.

The onboard weather radar has become one of the most misunderstood instruments in today’s modern cockpit. With operation and design rooted in 50+ year old technology it is easy to see why NEXRAD and advanced uplinked weather have become the norm. Relying on this uplink weather alone has proved to be deadly to many flights where just a basic knowledge of the weather radar would have made all the difference.

Bill has a passion for the radar and teaching it to students and seminars with a way that makes it understandable for all. With TBM Pro Training’s Radar and weather courses you will learn to master those red blobs and gain confidence flying in the weather that keeps many on the ground.

Reminder

  • Learn the correct preflight techniques for your radar
  • TBM Pro Training’s course teaches students to understand the radar beam and how to find the weather.
  • Nexrad and uplink weather provide valuable planning tools, but for tactical weather avoidance the onboard radar must be used for a safe and smooth flight. Storms can build at rapid rates that are outside of the update cycles of the NEXRAD weather.
  • Training in the actual weather with an experienced professional allows you to gain a great understanding of what all those blobs are on the screen, learning firsthand the limitations of the uplinked weather when up close to the storms
